Inscryption Wiki

The undying Cat. Sacrificing the poor beast does not kill it.

The Cat is a Beast card that appears in Act I and Act II of Inscryption.

Variants[]

If sacrificed nine times it becomes an Undead Cat. This is a reference to the myth that cats have nine lives.[1] It loses the Many Lives sigil when it transforms.

Strategy[]

The Cat is a weak support card. Its only purpose is to be sacrificed repeatedly to play other cards. This can be used effectively to play many cards quickly and easily, albeit without generating Bones in the process. If you are using a sacrifice heavy deck or the Red Hart, the Cat is a valuable card to have.

Act I[]

Good Upgrades

  • Health from the Campfire allows it to survive better.
  • Unkillable returns the card to your hand after it perishes.
  • Worthy Sacrifice allows for a high-cost deck to be viable, and can usually guarantee a three-cost card to be played on the first turn if Cat is the only one-cost card in your deck.
  • Waterborne prevents it from perishing.
  • Stinky can allow it to be placed in front of 1-Strength cards, simultaneously allowing it safe haven from the opposing card while also blocking cards behind it from entering play.
  • If you so desire, sacrifice it onto an equally cheap but stronger card unit such as the Wolf Pup.
  • Fecundity can allow for the multiple Cats to be on the board, which can be useful for either setting up cards that require multiple sacrifices, or in an emergency, block damage from opposing cards and stall. Note that the latter strategy can't be done as effectively in Kaycee's Mod, due to only being able to get one card from that sigil, so this should only be used when no other option is available.
  • If it gains enough upgrades via the Campfire, Morsel can make multiple cards stronger via it's stats. This is especially useful in Kaycee's Mod if using the Mantis God deck, which features two starting Ring Worms that can be fed to the survivors to open up future Campfire events for maximum stat transfers.

Bad Upgrades

Undead Cat[]

The Undead Cat is difficult to use and can be seen as more of an Easter Egg rather than an effective card. However, there are ways to summon it so that it can be used. If paired with Field Mice, you can start an endless sacrifice loop and that always results in the same card being played over and over, and eventually transforming the Cat into the Undead Cat. In this state, it is a powerful all purpose card - effectively a budget Grizzly. However, this strategy should not be relied upon as a consistent method. In addition, any sigils transferred to the cat through totem events will not be applied to the undead cat, nor will increases in the cat's damage granted by the campfire event or the fledgling sigil, which limits the power of the undead cat significantly.

Act II[]

Unlike the previous act, the Cat can no longer obtain stat buffs or sigils, limiting its use. In addition, the existence of Pharaoh's Pets makes it a sub-optimal card comparatively. However, as there is no longer a side deck of Squirrels in Act II, this can be helpful in the early part of the Act until better cards can be obtained. It is also easier to unlock the Undead Cat since you can custom build a deck around using the Cat's ability to sacrifice continually.

Notes[]

  • The Cat also appears in Sacrifices Must Be Made, the game-jam precursor to Inscryption. Here it bears its signature Many Lives Sigil, but has 3 Health instead of 1.
