Hey didja know? I'm named after one of the developers of Inscryption! Pretty cool, huh?
Kaycee Hobbes is a character in Inscryption. She serves minor roles in Act II and Act III, alongside a cameo in Act I.
Background[]
Kaycee was born sometime in 1970. No other information about her life is known, but eventually in Winter of 1992, she was killed by a falling piece of ice, killing her at the young age of 22. She was buried where Grimora's Crypt stands today, and maintains the well to collect OLD_DATA for her. Even in the afterlife, the ice embedded into her head has made her permanently cold.[2]
Personality[]
Kaycee has very little dialogue that isn't interrupted by her being cold, and as such her personality cannot fully be assessed. It's possible she has the same personality as her real world counterpart, though she also has very little dialogue.
Relationships with other Characters[]
- Though they never directly interact or mention each other, it can be assumed that Kaycee is loyal to Grimora, due to collecting OLD_DATA for her.
- Kaycee is mentioned by The Angler when he is talking about his role to the player. Though it isn't further expanded upon, it could be assumed they are rivals for their roles.
Act I and Kaycee's Mod[]
I was appalled to find that Leshy chose to use the Kaycee Hobbes' ghoul skull as a trinket on his shelf.
Kaycee Hobbes in devlog Entry 6
Kaycee does not directly appear as a character. However, her skull is used to hold Teeth and Leshy's candles during Boss Battles.
Act II[]
Brrrr! Did someone leave the AC on?
Kaycee appears as an opponent in Grimora's Crypt, blocking passage to the well. When spoken to, she will engage in dialogue and initiate battle.
Battle[]
Kaycee will primarily play Skeletons and Draugrs, with a Revenant showing up after a few turns. The Draugrs are there to act as blockers before releasing their Skeletons to attack back. The ideal method to defeating Kaycee is to play cards that can attack round the Draugrs, such as cards bearing the Airborne Sigil.
Post-Battle[]
Upon defeating her, Kaycee will give the player a Deathly Card Pack and a piece of her epitaph. She will then turn incorporeal and allow the player to pass, offering additional dialogue if spoken to.
Tombstone Riddle[]
Kaycee's tomb is the leftmost one, and the following epitaphs must be inserted into it to access Grimora.
- Kaycee Hobbes
1970 - Winter 1992 - Hit by a falling piece of ice.
- The defibrillator failed.
Act III[]
You wish to pass this ice? Well, I suppose I could c-c-clear it. A little bit of heat should do the trick.
Kaycee appears as an NPC in Filthy Corpse World. When spoken to, she will engage in dialogue and clear a shortcut, then disappear from the game.
Trivia[]
- Kaycee died the youngest out of all three Ghouls.
- The real Kaycee Hobbes died due to fire related complications, making Kaycee's ice-related death ironic. This is further acknowledged in Act III, where P03 uses Kaycee to melt ice blocking a shortcut. She says, "A little bit of heat should do the trick," causing P03 to laugh at the dark irony.
- Leshy also uses Kaycee's skull to hold teeth on the shelf behind him.
Quotes[]
Act II[]
- Initiating a battle with the player:
- "Brrrr! Did someone leave the AC on? Oh, come on, dude! It's freezing in here! Maybe a heated battle will help."
- Player's deck is invalid:
- "Oh... something's wrong. It's your deck. Or, rather, your lack of a valid one. You've got 20 cards in it, right?"
- Player loses the battle:
- "Brrrr! Nope. I'm still cold."
- "Brrrr! Come on. Try a bit harder!"
- Player wins the battle:
- "You won, but now I'm a bit less cold. Take a pack. On the house. You did beat me. So I guess I've gotta fess up. The name's K- Kaycee. Kaycee Hobbes. I'm from the tombstone on the left."
- Spoken to:
- "K- Kaycee. Kaycee Hobbes is the name. Tombstone on the left. Brrrr!"
- "Brrrr! Tombstone on the left."
- "Is there a draft in here? It's freezing!"
